number of shows played: 59
km's driven:  21,182km
income: $4305 ($741 from community over capitalism t-shirts and $3564 from door deals)
This means we make on average $72.96/ show

TRANSPORT

We are touring in a 1-ton 15-passenger van that was purchased collectively by the 5 tour members (who comprise 2 bands) for $1400CND. We have spent a considerable amount of time and love and a little cash fixing up our van to be a suitable home/vehicle for our tour.

gallons of gas purchased: 906.75
us dollars spent on gas: $ 3399.5
average gas millage: 23.36 km/g
average price of gas: 3.67$/G

EXPENSES

gas: $3399.50

Individual expenses :
It was estimated that the tour participants spent around 15 dollars on average each day on food and drink. Some days we were fed by our hosts or the venue provided band members with drinks or a meal. We were able to save money buy buying from grocery stores and making shared picnic meals. Some days people decided to splurge. This would mean that for a 69 day tour you would need to save around $1000 dollars.

Each band's individual merchandise (CDs, cassettes, records, zines, buttons, posters etc) was able to make enough money to cover one member's daily expenses.

ok vancouver ok merch: $975.5 (16.25/day)

INCOME

we have had a total of one guarantee (of $150) and the rest of the shows are percentages of the door money. In many houses and smaller venues we take 100 percent of the door. In some large venues we get less to account for sound and door workers wages.

Here is a break down of the types of shows we have booked and their relative successes. I have chosen to categorize the shows in two sets:

Set one is divided 3 ways to describe how we booked the show a. through friends or friends of friends contacts b. through the resource dodgy.org or c. an internet find that can't be categorized into the other two categories. a chance show.

Set two describes what type of venue hosted the show, a. a bar where all attendees must be 21 years of age or older b. a show in a house or other dwelling that is used primarily as a living space or c. an established all ages space like a gallery, music venue, infer shop, cafe or restaurant that books live music.

1.HOW WE GOT THE SHOW

a. friends or friends of friends  $1790 24 shows = $74.58 / show
b. DoDIY.org $1497 24 shows = $62.37/ show
c. Random internet find $ 1018 12 shows = $84.83/ show

2. WHAT TYPE OF SHOW IT WAS

a. bar show 21+ $753 11  shows = $68.45/ show
b. house show (all ages)  $1329 20 shows = $66.45/ show
c. Venue/gallery/cafe (all ages)  $2223 29 shows = $76.65/ show

We have chosen to rank our best and worst door payouts and compare them by venue type, how the show was booked and what night of the week the show fell on. When examining the data it is evident that our highest payouts at the door came from established DIY venues that were all ages. The way the show was booked seemed to have less influence over the success or lack there of of our best and worst shows on this tour. The more important variable tended to  be the night of the week we played. With our thursday, friday, saturday and holiday shows proving to be more financially beneficial.

When you add in data about our merch sales, the most economical shows tend to be booked through friends at an established all ages space or house. Shows on weekend nights tend to be more profitable.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we think that part one of our tour was financially mediocre. Our total income was $4305 and our on the road expenses were roughly the same (with gas being our largest expenditure at $3399.5). We essentially came close to breaking even on our group expenses. However each individual was responsible for their own personal expenses and we need to front the money for the tour vehicle.  Stay tuned for part 2 and part 3 of our Community Over Capitalism Tour report.
